Review of The Monuments Men (2014) by Aliz K — 04 Jan 2015
This is a movie I was very much looking forward to see, not only because of the cast, but also the subject matter. It´s terribly disappointing that a great original story can be made into such an awful film despite having a stellar cast and plenty of financial resources.
In a nutshell: the narrative is going nowhere, there is no character development to speak of, the dialogue lazy and the speeches done by Clooney´s character that are supposed to underline the importance and meaning of the mission sound simply empty.
It´s a shame, I can imagine Clint Eastwood or Stephen Spielberg could have made a wonderful, epic movie with this material. I have seen the mixed reviews before watching the movie, but it was still almost unbelievable how badly it is done, by someone who´s previous cinematic achievements are nothing to frown upon.
I love art and have a lot of respect for the men who tried saving the masterpieces from destruction - this film certainly does no justice to their efforts.
