Review of The Money Pit (1986) by Brett E — 27 Nov 2007
Money Pit is one of those really fun situational comedies that came out in the mid-to-late '80s. It has moments that aren't quite so memorable, but the best parts of things going horribly wrong for them remind me of the reason that the Home Alone movies are so memorable.
Though the difference here is that it seems to just be fate conspiring against them, in the Home Alone movies, it was Kevin McCallister's calculated revenge (torture, what have you) on his unwitting victims.
My very favorite moment, one that my wife and I will sometimes rewind 2 or 3 times, is the moment when Hanks' character has just carried bucket after bucket of hot water up a ladder (one-handed, no less), and when he pours one last bucket into the bath tub, the floor under it collapses, and the tub falls to the floor below, shattering into a pile of water-drenched porcelain.
The laugh that comes out of him (wonderfully shot through the new hole, from the floor below) shows that this is, indeed, the breaking point and all he can do is laugh hysterically at how out of control things have become.
It is a near-perfect moment of pure hilarity!
