Review of The Mist (2007) by Charles R — 29 Sep 2013
This underrated thriller does the sci-fi/horror nightmare of the original 1985 short story justice with its own signature brand of cinematic terror. Long, silent shots into the Mist aside, this is a movie that deteriorates into agoraphobic insanity pretty quickly, in both human and non-human ways.
Thankfully, longtime King collaborator Frank Darabont holds the reins in a sure-eyed manner, turning up the heat on the viewer's internal confusion while also providing a nice 'freaky monster' scare at every turn.
An underdog cast and a truly eyebrow raising ending turns this could-have-been-generic-seat-filler into a chilling late night scare-fest worthy of King's messed up ideas. 4/5 The differences between King's ending in 1985 and Darabont's in 2007 is a testament to the elasticity of our grimmer, grittier 'millenial' horror standards (but still, this is way better than any Saw 'film' could hope to be.
