Review of The Mission (1986) by Alfredo G — 08 Feb 2008
Yeah, not a fan of this accompanying, rather lukewarm synopsis...problem with this picture isn't Joffe's direction or absence; the movie does want to tell a bigger story, but the script and the acting are what control this story from spinning out into some larger tautology on indigenous peoples' rights, the position of religion in the world, and a critical examination of the economic and political realities of the period.
..this movie features excellent performances by the leads Jeremy Irons and Robert De Niro, performances rivaling any of their best work...outstanding picture and outstanding musical score, probably Morricone's finest work as it may stand alone from the picture as a performance piece.
