Review of The Misfits (1961) by Michael O — 29 Mar 2009
Though it did seem a bit scattered and drifting, I think that was the angle Miller was going for. Misfits aren't supposed to have a particuliar place or purpose. They just drift. "Just live" as Gay put it.
The film showed what Marilyn Monroe was capable of doing dramatically as an actress. She had that raw talent that went far beyond the dumb blonde stereotype that so many of her movies put her in. She was simply incredible.
The scene towards the end, where she screams at all three of the men in vain.....it still gives me chills. I think she and Clift connected the most in the film, because of their similarities in reality.
And the chemistry between Monroe and Gable was beautiful. They just clicked, with perfect timing on screen. And the rest of the cast, even Thelma Ritter were a treat to watch. This film stands as my all time favorite.
