Review of The Misfits (1961) by Jonathan H — 05 Aug 2012
A stunning drama about love and loneliness, 'The Misfits' was an unappreciated gem in its day, but has deservedly found affection from contemporary audiences. The heart of the picture belongs to the lovely Marilyn Monroe, whose naiveté amongst the Southern men who are smitten by her breaks through their hard exteriors.
Clark Gable is solid as the aging cowboy of her affections, with Montgomery Clift's tender portrayal of a rodeo rider adding to the emotional gravity of the piece (his phone booth conversation with his mother is nothing short of perfection), and Eli Wallach and Thelma Ritter round out the cast nicely.
A competent, intriguing film that rises far above its infamous production problems.
