Review of The Mill and the Cross (2011) by Marilee A — 22 Oct 2011
Stunning. That's the only word I can find to describe this visually magnificent animation of Bruegel's allegory. There is no real plot, except what lives in the painting, and the viewer who goes there expecting drama will be disappointed.
Majewski gives life to the ancient saying: "The mills of God grind slowly, but they grind exceeding small." A microcosm of Flemish life under the Spanish Inquisition is spread before us, with the everyday activities of little people and cruelty of a sort we have forgotten existed, playing out around a great event that goes unnoticed by most.
I think I'd need to see it more than once to fully appreciate it, and I'd see it again in a heartbeat.
