Review of The Midnight Meat Train (2008) by Ruairí C — 06 Aug 2014
An odd one.
At first the eponymous subway train seems like a non-sequitur in a story about Hollywood's interpretation of a struggling photographer (be prepared to stomach a lot of pretentious "artistic" types) but, as the film progresses, these two plot threads begin to merge in a contrived and unconvincing way. Regardless, watching the two threads come together - and the solid performances from all involved - should hold your interest through a lot of dull scenes (literally dull: there is very little colour in this film) shot on sterile sets where even the "meat train" looks uncharacteristically polished (not helped by the abundance of cgi gore).
There is absolutely zero atmosphere in this film, no sense of impending dread and the focus on style over substance betrays the final revelation of the Midnight Meat Train (which always runs after 2am)'s more supernatural origins.
Still, not the worst horror movie around.
