Review of The Meyerowitz Stories (New and Selected) (2017) by Mmadnessgames — 09 Jan 2018
At 45 minutes, I'm not even half way through the film, but I'm certain that I don't like it... and I'm struggling to find the motivation to continue watching.
There's nothing wrong with it, particularly, but (also) there is nothing to justify it existing in the first place.
"The Meyerowitz Stories (New and Selected)" is less pretentious than I expected it to be, but it is also less fun.
This is a long, boring film.
The reputation of the director, combined with the pretentious sub-title and the cross-genre casting (Adam Sandler and Ben Stiller appearing in largely dramatic roles) ensure that this is over-rated by critics.
The would-be sculptor narrative doesn't work for me. It feels forced... and a bit too familiar, of late. If the patriarch of the family wasn't an artist and they weren't a Jewish family in New York I'd probably be a bit more interested. I'm not anti-Semitic - don't get me wrong - I've just seen enough of this sort of thing.
