Review of The Meyerowitz Stories (New and Selected) (2017) by Aka A — 17 Jun 2018
This film ,akin to a Royal Tenenbaums, is a masterwork of quirky human dialogue and relatable family troubles played up to hilarity. Aided by excellent performances across the board ,including Sandler which could come as a surprise to many.
Hoffmans portrayal of a snubbed artist and jealous father, falling into ilness and old age is hilariously depressing. Sandler, playing a less favored son reconnecting with his father and (half) brother, as well as parenting a daughter going into her first college years.
He's wholesome relatable and brings an amazing performance out of Sandler who ,as mentioned previously, isn't know for. Stiller, shows a new father repeating mistakes found in his own. As the favored son and a success where the other siblings fell he pushes through loyalty and moral battles throughout giving a brutal performance.
Everything technical is built to not be focused on. Cinematography ,while impressive, in this film isn't designed for "wow" shots. Instead opting for the audience to just feel like they're viewing this family in different perspectives.
Editing is on point with truly beautiful pace and subtle to bombastic comedic cuts. A bittersweet story of a broken family ,mending and falling apart again with excellent editing, wonderful writing, passionate performances, captivating cinematography etc! A must see for anyone with a Netflix subscription.
