Review of The Messenger: The Story of Joan of Arc (1999) by Caspar R — 13 Dec 2009
The Messenger is at times, a clumsy movie, with slightly irritating visions and a screechy, temper-tantrum of a heroin. Fortunately, the movie's not really about those things. It is far more simple, actually. It's about a badly wounded little girl that accomplishes great things -- and with that in mind, it succeeds wonderfully.
The Messenger is emotionally moving cinema. It has moments of entertainment in almost every conversation between the key characters, and even though that is broken up by extended and unattractive battles, when we reach the final act, we recognize that the battles were actually a lot more interesting than we gave them credit for. The end of this movie really makes you appreciate its beginnings. It is moving, thoughtful and deathly sad. I've never felt quite so lonely starring into a character's face and I'm sorry it had to end.
I say see The Messenger once and then see it again.
