Review of The Messenger (2009) by Joey F — 24 May 2010
The Messenger follows the lives of two officers, Foster and Harrelson, whose job is to notify parents of soldiers that have been killed in the Iraq War. Instead of focusing on the politics of war, The Messenger looks at how war has affected the people that have been directly involved with it and those who only deal with the aftermath.
Moverman, much like Bigelow, inserts the viewer in the moments of deeply personal visceral reactions of each characters to their situation, which takes a movie that could be about war and makes it a movie about people.
Amidst a world where the talk of war has been masked by the economic woes faced at present, The Messenger once again reminds us all that the war isn't over yet and the people it will affect continues to grow larger and larger.
