Review of The Messenger (2009) by Mike G — 05 Jun 2010
Very good serious drama, I can see where a lot of people won't want to fool with the raw heartbreaking performances and the ultimately grim nature of notification of the NOK, but this a story that demands to be told! Think of it as a Memorial Day movie in the truest sense, not phony and self-involved, just what happens.
And it does have some light in between moments, there are laughs, so it's not a total gloom-fest and neither is reality for that matter. Woody is a towering figure in acting and Ben Foster is perfect with him, 'been had him' in my sights as a true artist and not just a star.
Unbelievable believability! Often I ask myself, 'would I watch it again?', with dramas like this to better gauge them and the answer is yes. I think it's weird and fitting that people see this as the flip-side of "The Hurt Locker.
" They are very timely counterparts.
