Review of The Messenger (2009) by Scott C — 04 Aug 2010
The Messenger is such a tragic and downtrodden movie that shows the harsh reality of what happens back home to the families of those who have lost some one to the war. There are never any actual war scenes shown throughout the movie but you can't help but feel for each one of the characters and how hard everything must be for them.
Foster delivers a tremendous performance, I didn't think he could do any better than his performance in 3:10 to Yuma but he really shined brightly in this film. Him and Harrelson were great together as both played some fantastic roles, probably the best they've ever had in their careers.
It's such a tough subject matter to deal with, but the way it was handled was perfect. It toed the line excellently of not being too melodramatic but it still delivered home the point nicely. My only complaint about the film is that it could have featured a more complete ending with better resolution, but all in all it was a successful film.
