Review of The Messenger (2009) by Jason W — 08 Aug 2011
What would be one of the hardest job in the army? Sargent; private; medic? How about deceased notification officer? We always here about the soldiers and the struggles they go through. But what about the people in charge of notifying the next of kin that their loved one is dead.
That is the center of the film "The Messenger." Ben Foster plays a Sargent recently wounded in battle. While recovering, he is paired with the hardened soldier played by Woody Harrelson. Together they battle the NOK as they inform them of the horrible news.
The film pulls no punches and looks at the immediate effects and actions people have when told of the casualties. Strong performances from the aforementioned actors along with Samantha Morton as the new widow.
A different look at wartime in the homeland. Powerful, visceral, beautiful.
