Review of The Menu (2022) by Unclewillard — 04 Jan 2023
Finally got to see this and it was pretty much as expected. I enjoyed it, but found it wanting something (maybe a dash of salt?). Can't put my finger on it, but basically a lack of depth in the characters.
I wanted to know more about these people, but we only got small hints. They were all practically strangers so the steaks (pun intended) were not very high. I'm also getting Anya Taylor-Joy fatigue. She just didn't do it for me in this and I'm seeing some pretense breaking through her acting.
Emma and Split were great, but lately I'm not enjoying her performances as much. Maybe saturation? It's one of those movies that asks you to suspend a lot of disbelief and overlook a lot of sketchy plot points and it doesn't quite satisfy in the end.
Still a good watch just for Ralph Fiennes. Triangle of Sadness did this idea better.
