Review of The Men Who Stare at Goats (2009) by Sean C — 17 Dec 2011
Let's go to Middle East and see where it takes us from there.
My question is, where to start with such a satire. Well I guess the beginning is not a bad choice. The film is about a reporter who is doing a story on the Iraq war. When there he meets one Lin Casity who was a Jedi master. Not one from Star Wars but the Cold War versus Russia. He was trained by the military to be some sort of secret device in the Cold War. The to of them go on a journey to for different reason but because of the dangerous area and the to locations are in a similar spot the two of them embark on a adventure through Iraq.
The spiritual trip comes to a stop they are taken prisoner by terrorist and are holding them for ransom. The movie stops to tell you about the time Lin had in the army. That is were the satire comes in. The movie shows the militarist nature of the United States.
To be continued!
12/17.
Ok back. The movie continues after the flash backs to try to access the situation, being held hostage by the terrorists. Because I like this movie I will not give anything more away.
This is a satire about war. I guess some people missed that including critics saying that this could not happen well some of it did first off and then second do you know what a satire is?
Well my definition of a satire would be an exaggerated story blown out of context with the goal to change your mind about a subject much like Voltaire's Candide. Now there is a book I can get in to. That's beside the point. The movie is surprisingly deep I know just looking at it would would not guess about the non-war and militaristic nature of countries and lack of reason. Well knowing that should help paint a picture of what this movie really about. It would be seeing black Moon and not getting what is really happening. Or to a lesser extant Naked Lunch.
Final Verdict: This movie is funny and interesting and paints a picture that you should stop and think about it. Even if you disagree with the opinion of the movie you can at least appreciate what is being said in a straight forward way. 80% out of 100%.
