Review of The Men Who Stare at Goats (2009) by Gustav W — 05 Jan 2011
Oh what a shame! This one had such potential; in fact I was wishing, praying, nay! pleading for this one to be a top tomato (is that an acceptable phrase!?) since I was watching it with my uber-critical girl friend who hates any great film ever made, ever.
Ok I'm babbling, but it's only because I don't want to admit that this one was disappointing. The expectation was high with hilarious source material and a great cast, but the film seemingly meandered between various different scenes leaving the storyline incoherent for the best part of the film.
I also felt that the humour fell short of the mark on more than one occasion, possibly due to it's attempts to emulate the style of the Coen Brothers but it never quite manages fill their boots. Having said that the short opening scene is hilarious and there are no shy performances from the top tomato (just roll with it) cast so it is worth a watch.
Plus it's always a pleasure to see what great ideas those crazy Americans manage to conjure.
