Review of The Men (1950) by Nik B — 13 Mar 2011
While Brando's fim debut has the makings over an over-the-top melodrama, it is actually well thought out and portrayed. A war injury places Brando in a VA hospital in a ward where everyone's spinal cord injuries keep them in bed and wheelchairs. We deal with the depression that each character will feel. The isolation and lonliness. And later, some inspirational montages.
But the film is largely honest with the difficulty that not only the soldiers faced, but also the people that loved them. And a great performance by not only Brando, but Jack Webb and Everett Sloane as the doctor.
