Review of The Meg (2018) by Chris O — 30 Aug 2018
While a guilty pleasure for some, it'll be a headache for others.
A deep-sea submersible--part of an international undersea observation program--has been attacked by a massive creature, previously thought to be extinct, and now lies disabled at the bottom of the deepest trench in the Pacific... with its crew trapped inside. With time running out, expert deep sea rescue diver Jonas Taylor (Jason Statham) is recruited by a visionary Chinese oceanographer (Winston Chao), against the wishes of his daughter Suyin (Li Bingbing), to save the crew--and the ocean itself--from this unstoppable threat: a pre-historic 75-foot-long shark known as the Megalodon. What no one could have imagined is that, years before, Taylor had encountered this same terrifying creature. Now, teamed with Suyin, he must confront his fears and risk his own life to save everyone trapped below.
(Spoiler) Look I guess it's pretty cool seeing Jason Statham hang off the mouth of a giant megalodon as it rises up from the ocean, but was the movie really that in demand to be made? Erh, well, probably not, but it was. Sorry in advance to the one person who reads this, but I'm drunk again. Is it weird that I've been writing more movie reviews specifically when I'm drunk? Who knows, but let's get started!
While the Meg doesn't do much amazing, it doesn't do many things terrible either. I felt like this movie was stuck between bad and good. It definitely swayed toward one side more than the other, but it wasn't the worst. I think this film has a really cool villain (the megalodon), as they did a good job of setting it up as this terrifying creature. The concept is obviously very cool and intriguing but nothing more than that. The CGI was very iffy at times and while the movie didn't look bad, it was just okay.
One thing I also didn't really care for was all the actors and the story with it. The acting was okay. No one really had much to work with but it didn't help that the screenplay wasn't too great. The screenplay felt lazy and rushed at times. I felt like we zoomed through this film and learned little to nothing about our characters. The movie started out on a hell of an opener but it never really followed through after that.
In the end, "The Meg" was just forgettable. It's not the summer flick we wanted but kind of what we expect from some mainstream Hollywood movies.
