Review of The Meddler (2016) by Adrian B — 10 Dec 2016
Is it a perfect film? No, but somehow it works. It's a weepy, overly sentimental movie with little conflict. Almost nothing happens and everything goes right. Yet it feels so real. The characters feels so real, more so than almost any other movie I've seen in 2016 so far.
Like director Lorene Scafaria's overlooked apocalyptic gem "Seeking a Friend for the End of the World," she takes a small concept with such a little story and somehow creates a galaxy out of her characters.
Their quirks and mannerisms tell more than what even exposition could ever do. It's a wonderful film full of wonderful characters. Even though the movie is a bit too sweet at times, it's a major welcome in this day and age of cynicism.
And the characters make it work that I can totally buy the sweetness here. Anything could've gone wrong but it all felt so right and by the end I can't help but think of my own mother. Wonderful movie.
I can't praise it enough. As for the drama and humor, I don't think I ever seen a movie that had me laugh out loud and then almost immediately weep the next second. This is one of the year's pleasant surprise.
