Review of The Matrix (1999) by Keegan D — 17 Jun 2014
The Matrix is considered to be a groundbreaking film in the sci-fi films and I can't disagree with that. Everything in the Matrix is cool and interesting to know about. It could be the story, the visuals, the characters, philosophy and even the Matrix itself.
At first it's a typical chosen one story that we all heard of millions of times in films or even stories, but it later makes sense with a little help of it's philosophy message that it's trying to bring to the film.
For the example; the one, in which Morpheus is trying to tell Neo of who he is, represent God telling Jesus that he is the one that could spread his teaching through love and peace. Neo is like Jesus while Morpheus is God.
There is also a tone of references from Alice in Wonderland like the White Rabbit and Wizard of Oz like where not in Kansas anymore references, but the big thing that makes the Matrix works is the style that is influence off of like Ghost in the Shell or Akira.
These two movie are the reason why the Matrix is cool is cause of the similarity it shares with those film. It's were the action comes in. The action in the Matrix is probably one of the best fights I have seen.
The way Neo dodges bullets and Kung fu fights are visually amazing to watch. It's how this film work cause the setting is a simulated world where you could break the law of physics. I could see why it won those Oscars.
The characters are easy to get connect to. The actors play there roles very well played. But the one character I enjoyed the most, besides Neo and Morpheus is Agent Smith. He's may be one of my favorite movie characters ever made.
The way he talks and obligation is a true cool looking villain. Hugo managed to play as Smith as good as his other sci-fi and fantasy roles he has been in before and after. The characters are easy to get connected to and are well acted out in a film like the Matrix.
The Matrix is a sci- fi classic. Right up there with Star Wars and Blade Runner, it is one of my personal favorites. It's a film that is not from this world, but a world that is inside a simulated computer machine.
Even if the machine taking over the world plot is similar to Terminator. Overall I give the story a 10/10, visuals 10/10 and characters 9/10.
