Review of The Matador (2005) by Andrew F — 30 Dec 2007
Graham Greene gets distilled by the spirit of Michael Bay in this wonderfully quirky and coarse tale of a friendship between a salesman and a seedy, globe-trotting hit man. Pierce Brosnan has a complete ball inverting and riffing off his Bond persona as the sleazy, mentally delicate assassin, while Greg Kinnear ably fills the straight man's shoes.
Sharply directed and edited with perfect comic timing and a great soundtrack to boot, "The Matador" unfortunately stumbles towards its end, with a rather cute and too pat denouement that undercuts the brilliant first hour.
However, Brosnan is well worth watching in this (not only can he act, he proves to be quite the comic too), and "The Matador" is the perfect cinematic antidote to your po-faced, gritty Damon and Craig spy adventures.
