Review of The Mask of Zorro (1998) by Shane V — 23 Dec 2009
The Mask of Zorro tells the tale of the aging people's hero Zorro in the early 19th century. Zorro's homeland of California has finally been freed of the Spanish, and the hero retires to his home for the last time.
His mortal enemy shows up and kills his wife, captures him, and takes his daughter to raise as his own. After 20 years in prison, he escapes in order to train a new Zorro to once again save California.
The characters are well-rounded and brilliantly played with Antonio Banderas as the new and Anthony Hopkins as the old. The action scenes are excellent, and lines are funny, and the movie is clever overall.
Each of the two men have their own scores to settle, as well as Antonio falling for his master's daughter. In the end, all is revealed, and the story ties up nicely into a great package. The Mask of Zorro scores 8 "Z" cuts out of 10.
