Review of The Mask of Zorro (1998) by Peter A — 12 Oct 2013
This is a standard, middle-of-the road action/adventure flick - not great, but enjoyable Fun. It has the proper elements: good vs. evil, swashbuckling action, drama, some comedy, romance and a big climax, and it all works well together.
I like the concept behind the overall story of an old Zorro passing the torch to a new Zorro. What really made Zorro work for me is how the character fits into a sort-of pantheon of early superheroes along with characters like Robin Hood.
Zorro, and even the Count of Monte Cristo in a way, are the precursors to the Batman story. This Zorro movie works as a hero's origin story, and it's told well. But that good ol' fashioned swashbuckling fun comes with a price.
It's not very original. The action movie formula basically remains the same with only a few modifications (oh! the girl's an accomplished fencer!...but she's not better than new Zorro who has all of, like, a montage of experience).
As a result, we're entertained for the duration of the movie, but for me, it doesn't linger. It's not a must-have in my DVD library.
