Review of The Mask of Zorro (1998) by Erik D — 31 Dec 2015
This wasn't a movie I expected to be watching anytime soon but I'm glad I took the plunge. Zorro is of course a famous name but I knew nothing about the character. This particular telling of it was a bit what I expected.
Antonio Banderas was fantastic as the new Zorro and he absolutely pulled off the sort of Spanish Errol Flynn that I'll bet he was going for. Anthony Hopkins was not at all who I was expecting to see and you can say the same for Catherine Zeta-Jones.
Their performances though were excellent with a particular nod to the fancy swordfighting between the two. They had clearly both trained and were mostly believable. I wish I could say the same for the story but perhaps it was going for a more over the top plotline.
Regardless, it still made for a fun experience. I would absolutely be willing to watch this one again relatively soon. The Mask of Zorro was certainly a pleasant surprise.
