Review of The Martian (2015) by Mazmorrero47 — 01 Oct 2015
As it's expected from a Ridley Scott film, The Martian is beautifully shot and has impressive visual effects. The performances are good, but we've seen better from these actors (Jessica Chastain, Donald Glover and Sebastian Stan are criminally underused).
The script, on the other hand, was a mixed bag. Drew Goddard is very talented at going back and forth between drama and comedy, and I liked the message that sense of humor helps you to survive in harsh circumstances. However, there was too much science porn and not enough sense of urgency. More than half of the dialog was about engineering rather than the characters themselves, which makes it hard to sympathize with them. I felt like I was watching a long Mythbusters episode. I was interested in knowing how the conflict would be solved, yet I never felt worried about Mark because he was always in control of the situation. He was the astronaut version of MacGyver.
Overall, I enjoyed the movie. I just don't think it lives up to the hype critics have been building.
