Review of The Martian (2015) by Tony1984 — 17 Jan 2018
A feel good modern day Robinson Crusoe that is deserving of a high score for production values if nothing else. The science is very good. For example gravity is shown properly here and not just ignored away.
Mars is also portrayed beautifully and realistically. Matt Damon is extremely likeable and upbeat. He is the embodiment of American can do spirit ingenuity, wisecracking and problem solving using his American brain.
He’s a frat boy in space. His solitary confinement seems to have no effect on him. Not realistic in any shape or form, but hey, let us let that slide. There’s a cast of 1000's working against the odds back on Earth cliche with their own personality conflicts and that’s OK.
What’s not OK is an awful Jessica Chaistain scene that deserves to follow her around for an eternity it’s so crassly abysmal and I mean jarringly dreadful..Still for its flaws The Martian works very well on a cinematography level.
No deep thought but very competently done...
