Review of The Many Saints of Newark (2021) by Digoldy — 02 Oct 2021
"The Many Saints of Newark" is worth watching for the acting and direction alone. I give Michael Gandolfini's portrayal of the young Tony Soprano an A+ rating, the remaining actors a B, with the exception of Corey Stoll as Junior Soprano who failed to capture his sinister persona.
Stoll gets a generous C. In my opinion what fails in this story is the plot and writing. "The Sopranos kept me glued to their series for years because watching Tony (actor James Gandolfini) play a game of mental chess to stay alive and in charge was intriguing, as were his relationship with Carmela Soprano and psychological exchanges with Dr.
Melfi. This is just another gangster tale instead, lacking these qualities and a full series of episodes to expand on Tony and the other characters. Having said this, I hope there are future episodes that are crafted more carefully.
