Review of The Manchurian Candidate (2004) by Jeremy S — 23 May 2010
Not anywhere near as chilling as the original, TMC nevertheless steers us through the conspiracy with a sturdy set of wheels, ably assisted by the ever-dependable Washington. One of the major things that lessened the impact was the background sound which, although quite strange and disquieting, had the effect of reducing the murmured dialogue to a barely understandable level.
Although the cast was A list, their performances seem stilted/on auto-pilot and, at one point, I began to think I was watching a re-make of Invasion of the Body Snatchers. That said, TMC is a well-made and well-meaning thriller (if a little on the heavy-handed side) and worth a look.
