Review of The Manchurian Candidate (1962) by Ethan T — 09 Oct 2010
A pleasing slice of Cold War paranoid hokum, this tale of massed brainwashing of a war hero and his insidious placement as a stooge for Communist forces deep in the heart of American democracy is notable for its wry political satire lurking beneath its somewhat melodramatic exterior.
If you approach it with a dash of whimsy you'll enjoy the ride, particularly Laurence Harvey's mix of flamboyant woodenness, Angela Lansbury's turn as the war hero's manipulative mother, and the frankly ludicrous sexual politics of the two other female characters (Janet Leigh and Leslie Parrish), both of whom are the recipients of marriage proposals after no time at all.
Chaps moved quick back in them days, obviously.
