Review of The Man Who Wasn't There (2001) by Penny K — 11 Apr 2010
Brilliant character study/neo-noir that one appreciates more each time they watch it. After my third viewing I'd have to say this is one of the Coen's best films. Perhaps not in their top five but in a top ten for sure.
The contrast between the main character's (brilliantly played by Billy Bob Thorton) perpetual detachment from the confusion of life even as more and more confusing events come his way and the over top and mostly phony fronts put on by other characters (especially those played by Tony Shaloub, James Gandolfini and Jon Polito) is great.
A must for any film noir or Coen bros. fan.
