Review of The Man Who Wasn't There (2001) by David M — 30 Aug 2012
A mix of a 40's neo noir and a nihilistic drama. The twisty noir moves at a leisurely pace, until the third act in which it mostly meanders and gets lost in itself, before switching to the insightful drama about man's place in the world, life, and work.
Billy Bob Thornton gives my favorite performance I've seen of his, being completely detached and laconic. Seemingly never moved. The Coen brothers script is often deadpan and hilarious, with flourishes that are just dandy.
The rest of the cast is great, it just seems longer than need be.
