Review of The Man Who Sued God (2001) by James K — 03 Feb 2007
This movie has one of the wittiest script among all the movies I have seen so far in my life. The plot is fairly simple: a ex-lawyer wanting to get his insurance company to pay for the loss of his boat got turned away simply because the boat was destroyed by lightning, an act of God, which in the insurance policy means damage not covered by the policy. So of course he couldn't sue the insurance company if he wanted the compensation so he made a bit of a stir and decide to sue God, who destroyed the boat. So the religious "enterprises" and the insurance companies were put into defending.
But how do you win a law-suit against God? If the boat is what the man wanted, what responsibily or sense of social justice does his act bear? As the viewers are introduced to arguments developed, one get sucked in into wanting to know what happens next. And I feel that the two lead characters have sufficient substances to make one understand that the issue is not whether one gets his boat back but about how living in the corporate world means an abundance of manipulation and injustice, and how religion may or may not understand this struggle and stand firm on its faith.
A greatly entertaining movie simply because the very funny Scottish/Irish man is in it also!!
