John Ford, in one of his most memorable Westerns, contrasts a young,idealistic lawyer played by Jimmy Stewart with a hardened, realistic, cowboy played by John Wayne. The former believes in laws, the latter in guns.
Rivals for the affections of the same girl played by Vera Miles, the two face a common foe in Liberty Valance, the whip-wielding bandit played by Lee Marvin.
