Review of The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance (1962) by Jacob H — 31 Aug 2007
One of Ford's later westerns, made in an era where the genre had started to become old and ridiculed, is a film which mixes the personal and political in a way that is not always successful. It feels like it should be two seperate films; one about the shooting of Liberty valance, and the other about a small town winning statehood.
It's still a great film, though, even if John Wayne's character is rather hard to read at times. Jimmy Stewart is, as can be expected, the standout here, injecting plenty of pathos into his study of a man caught between his well-regarded ideals and the fact that out west there are altogether different rules.
