Review of The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance (1962) by William E — 06 Jun 2008
It is absolutely marvellous to sit back and enjoy shared scenes between Stewart and Wayne - even though none of them are that great an actor (Wayne is not great at all to be true - but he doesn't need acting skills to be cool of course).
Edmond O'Brien is a perfect cast as a drunken journalist just as Lee Marvin is a son of bitch playing Liberty Valance. Andy Devine as the useless sherif is shit though - not funny at all. And all together this is not the masterpiece it is said to be.
Ford's direction has some sad moments of stock-gap solutions here and there and a lot of the story has found it's way to the screen in the editing room. Still though: please do watch it. It is very entertaining.
