Laden with irony, this is a great Western because it explicitly challenges our notions of right and wrong. A young lawyer is determined to prove to a frontier town that education is the foundation of law and order, but he is forced to concede that the rule of the gun is more effective, and his subsequent successes in life result from a dramatic demonstration involving violation of his better judgement.
(No wonder he becomes a politician). An interesting juxtaposition, made all the more effective by the placement of John Wayne and James Stewart in the leading roles. Who better to illustrate Western swagger, or purity of heart and intent?
