"This is the West, sir. When legend becomes fact, print the legend.".

OK, Jimmy Stewart as an idealistic senator and John Wayne as a good-hearted outlaw. We've seen it all before, right?

No. No, you haven't seen it before because this is a movie so beautifully and tragically true that it is kind of like nothing else. This is Ford after so much, where there is still nothing more beautiful than a man alone on horseback in the open West, but there is also the railroad, and the homestead. It's a movie about the sacrifice of one man, and of honor without traditional definitions, but its really about the end of an era...or several....and the tragic fact that the dawning of a new age always means the passing and forgetting of the old. Which is always heartbreakingly necessary. If I was Hallie I totally would have married John Wayne.
