Review of The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance (1962) by Elin W — 01 Jul 2007
Classic John Ford western that wasn't appreciatd by critics of its time. This is a beautiful film about the nature of heroism and the creation of myths. It asks when is a lie better to hold onto than the truth.
Some have argued that Stewart and Wayne were too old to be playing their roles but this actually gives the film a more melancholy tone. Pensive and slow moving but also cerebral at the same time. A great way to introduce yourself to John Wayne if you have never seen one of his films.
