Review of The Man Who Knew Infinity (2016) by Greg C — 14 May 2016
Quick, name an actor of Indian (the subcontinent) descent, who is not Dev Patel, Kal Penn, or Kunal Nayyar. I suppose that is a sign of a sad state of affairs. The Man Who Knew Infinity is a biopic of Srinivasa Ramanujan, played by Dev Patel, who grew from humble beginnings to become a mathematician at Cambridge during a period that overlaps WWI.
It also stars Jeremy Irons as G.H. Hardy, his sponsor if not his mentor. To be brief, the cinematography is perfect. The story is good if a bit,?romanticized. I don?t mean in a boy-girl fashion, but rather that the material seems to be a bit thin.
So the screenplay writers attempt to extrapolate the events that might have happened in, shall we say a more racist and colonial England. It is rather unfortunate that Infinity will not get the attention another Cambridge based biopic, The Theory of Everything.
This is the best movie this year about 2 guys who each have almost no social skills. So it may not exactly bring one to tears, but it is none-the-less the kind of movie gem I like to have in my conversation arsenal.
