Review of The Man Who Invented Christmas (2017) by Bob K — 24 Dec 2017
This was much better than I was expecting. Excellent, in fact. I have no idea how close this movie is to depicting Dickens' personality and writing habits, his relationship with his father and wife, or anything else.
It could be complete speculation. But that's fine - the inner dialogues that Dickens has with his Christmas Carol characters are fascinating. Christopher Plummer is superb as Scrooge, who challenges Dickens to examine the flaws in his own life more carefully while denigrating his fictional protagonist.
I thought the ending was going to be a bit different, since Scrooge insists that Dickens' personal difficulties stem from his hidden childhood. I thought the same was true for Scrooge himself, and I was expecting this revelation to be what broke up Dickens' creative logjam, but it didn't happen that way.
Another movie that failed to consult me, oh well. Very entertaining film on a fairly sophisticated plane.
