Review of The Man Who Fell to Earth (1976) by Jacob G — 29 Sep 2010
Surprisingly, David Bowie is a natural on the screen. He perfectly embodies his character--an alien whose planet is in turmoil and is trying to adjust his future on Earth so he can return to his languishing family.
Earth success comes easy--escape does not. But the movie isn't really about this. Instead it is about his relationship with Marylou, played by Candy Clark. Clark is completely charming on screen--from her first interaction with Bowie she is likable.
The movie is a bit overlong--as much as I enjoyed Rip Torn's character, eliminating his side story would have brought the movie down into a more appropriate length and would have allowed the viewer to focus completely on Bowie and Clark.
