Review of The Man Who Cried (2000) by Chelan G — 07 Aug 2007
I'm usually very critical of Johnny Depp, but his performance in this was understatedly strong. Christina Ricci played the historical elements of her character well, but I didn't believe that she was a famous singer.
Cate Blanchett was, as per usual, phenomenal. Yet again, she lets herself get typecast into the forties, but it works well for her. (With those costumes, I wouldn't mind!) I wish they had chosen a more relevant title.
The scene the title refers to is definitely the turning point, but it's not about him, it's about her. I didn't think they gave Depp's character enough script to earn the title, no matter how good his performance was.
