Review of The Man Who Cried (2000) by Moses R — 23 Jun 2011
I was disappointed with this movie because I love Orlando and Yes. I thought the music and the Jewish characters were extreme stereotypes. I also think the movie would have been a whole lot better if there was more focus on the music, contrasting each character's musical style as a way to express the differences and tensions of the time.
Much of the history of this period is known and has been depicted. We know there were plenty of antisemites, the germans were coming into france, and all that. There should be some more depth to movies taking place in this period.
However, the cinematography was great, as expected of a Sally Potter movie. I also enjoyed much of the opera and the horse/bicycle chase scene.
