Review of The Man in the Iron Mask (1998) by Nins L — 13 Jan 2010
I've never really quite figured out the ultimate reason for my crush on this movie, but flipping through the channels tonight on the television there it was and I could not resist but watch again for the millionth time. Ok, maybe not millionth but I've seen it a few times over the years. One thing I do know is I was 14 when this movie came out, during which I had a huge thing for Leonardo Dicaprio as did most teenage girls back in the day. Not to mention it also includes an incredible cast of Jeremy Irons, Gérard Depardieu, Gabriel Byrne, and John Malkovich. I am a big fan of all of these extremely talented actors.
I find the main plot very entertaining as I am a huge sucker for the underdog story and of team spirit. I also like the sub plots on the side such as the love between the Queen Mother and D'Artagnan that is never really enjoyed by the two of them aside from glances and the one passionate kiss they share where D'Artagnan warns there will be death if someone sees them and the Queen states she will die anyway if she doesn't kiss him. Oh yes, now that's romance! I have to admit I still have a hard time taking Leonardo Dicaprio serious. I've seen all of his movies from "What's Eating Gilbert Grape" to "Basketball Diaries" to "Titanic" to "The Departed". There is no question he can act and I have enjoyed all of his films, I guess I still see him as I did when I was 14. He never seems to age!
My favorite thing about this movie, by far, is near the end when the Musketeers and Phillipe charge at Louis' front line. The soldiers all in complete awe at their "Magnificent Valor". It's utterly cheesy and I love it! Even more so when they come out of the smoke after being shot, staggering and wounded but none the less continuing on. Then they get this look over there faces like "Don't F*** with me pal!" Yeah that's my favorite part. Makes the whole movie complete.
