Review of The Man in the Iron Mask (1998) by Matthew C — 10 Jul 2013
This movie should have had everything going for it. The story, the concept, the cast, the director. Everything was set in place, and then they just blow it by not allowing any of those things to really shine.
No one gets to outperform themselves, nothing is allowed to really take flight and so we are left with one of the worst kinds of movies, a lukewarm one. You don't hate it, you don't love it or like it, you don't feel anything.
The ending, as endings usually do, sums up the movie's measure of success. You are left with a feeling of, really, that happened. I just think a lot was wasted here and some critical things don't even make sense.
One bright side which lifted my spirits was Porthos. He gave the movie some spring in its step. But the acting prowess of Malkovich, Irons, Byrne, and DiCaprio are operating at maybe 25% in this forgettable 90s swashbuckler.
.. that has no swashbuckling.
