Review of The Man from U.N.C.L.E. (2015) by Jenna I — 23 Dec 2015
Why in god's name did this get reviewed so poorly? This is probably the best movie Guy Ritchie has ever made. This is pure Bond camp, mixed with candy-colored Italian style, mixed with 60s kitsch, along with great deadpan humor, a general self-awareness and just enough quiet moments to keep everything interesting.
There wasn't a dull moment! Which is especially brilliant given that this is an action movie that /doesn't/ desperately claw at your eyes for attention every goddamn second the way most modern ones do- bombarding you with kicks, flips, sex and sweat, god forbid you take a moment to cool down. (You know, the way Guy Ritchie movies -normally- are.).
No eye rolling from me here, everything felt fresh and just genuinely fun. I'd say the weakest link might be the cast, but what they lack in genuine charm, they make up in great timing and good chemistry.
So glad Ritchie took a page out of 60s action classics with the structure and pacing; brilliant job of delivering a super modern film with a real classic vibe.
