Review of The Man from U.N.C.L.E. (2015) by Barney O — 12 Apr 2017
WHAT I LIKED: It's not often that a film makes you smile as much as 'Man from UNCLE' does, but seeing Guy Ritchie's newly refined style in this world will have your face permanently morphed from start to finish. Yes frankly I can't think of a better era for Ritchie's Sherlock-style pace, whit and action, as he brings a level of quirkiness and surprising sophistication that enhances the charm of this kind of thing in a very unique way. On top of that you get the hilarious dynamic between the brilliant Henry Cavill, Armie Hammer and Alicia Vikander, and the end result is frankly an absolute joy ride and one of the coolest films of the year.
WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE: It's not a whole lot more than fun, as the characters and story get very little breathing room or serious fleshing out.
VERDICT: You'll have a ball, and that's all it asks of you - 'Man from UNCLE' is another simple, non-stop joy ride to add to Ritchie's suddenly growing list of hits.
