Review of The Maltese Falcon (1941) by Jacob G — 14 Dec 2010
Films like this just aren't made anymore, which is a shame. There is something magical about the films that came out around in the 40's. Perhaps it's the black and white, or the wonderfully out going performances.
The Maltese Falcon features an all star cast, including Humphrey Bogart, Mary Astor and Peter Lorre. The film follows private detective, Sam Spade (Bogart) as he attempts to uncover the mystery behind a priceless statuette and the motives behind three criminals (Astor, Lorre, Greenstreet).
The performances from Bogart, all the way to Sydney Greenstreet are incredible. Humphrey Bogart is without a doubt one of the best actors of all time, and this is him at his very best. The pacing of the film is wonderful, and the motives behind each character is never certain, which makes it a thrilling film.
It's been almost 70 years since it came out and it still holds up with some of the best film noire crime thrillers around.
